If you had to describe a person perfect for a career in investment management what would they be like and why?

I'm debating between a few careers so I'd like to know what type of person is perfect for a career in investment management so that I can figure out which career option suits me best. #finance #financial-services #investment-management #investing

Hi Helen,
I would say that a perfect person for investment management would be someone who has an intellectual curiosity for finance, enjoys to keep up with current events (especially business related), takes pride in their work, and pays attention to detail. I would suggest reading business news and investor relations presentations of companies to see if it peaks your interest.

Helen - I know this isn't the answer you want to hear. But there is no PERFECT person and there are a few reasons why, but to name a couple: 1) there is a variety of different roles that exercise different skills; 2) people of diverse backgrounds and skills add value to a team.

When I am recruiting for our internship and full-time college hires I generally tell students we are looking for students who are interested in or passionate about finance/macro, have a thirst to learn, demonstrate professional maturity and are motivated to achieve. To make generalizations about people who work at PIMCO, particularly about the investment side of the firm, they are passionate about macroeconomics/finance and care about their work because they care about our clients. The work we do is motivated by our clients.

I challenge you to continue to do everything you can to learn about different industries, opportunities and companies. The more research and networking you do, like being a part of careervillage, the more you will learn. You will learn what you want in a job/career, and even more importantly, you will learn what you do not want. Keep up the good work!
