I found summer camp work to be very engaging work when I needed to work for summers between school years. You have room and board covered and get a chance to make new friends and be outdoors during the prettiest months of the year, especially for that far north.

Hi Sydney,

The restaurant industry can be a great starting point. Since you are under 18 you will only be able to obtain a position as a busser, food runner, or hostess. The restaurant industry teaches many lessons you can translate onto a resume. Its also something you can continue on with starting as a busser, moving onto a server or barback, becoming a bartender or shift manager.

I would also suggest utilizing your network (family, friends, relatives) to inquiry about open positions. Maybe no one in your immediate network knows of one but someone in their's might.

Best of luck.

I found summer camp work to be a great fit for me to earn income as a student. You get to travel and make new friends. Also, you often get certified as a lifeguard, so you can use that certification for part-time work during the other parts of the year. You can use the money you save up over the summer to help pay for your schooling.

Madhumitha’s Answer

Hi Sydney,

Perhaps you can also consider ticket or counter sales job at a super market or local theatre or a theme park etc. The reason i suggest this is because you could learn a thing or two about customer service. In any job that you may do at a later stage, you will realize that customer service or client satisfaction is the key to the success of any business.

I personally know a few friends from my grad school who have done these kind of ticket-sales jobs in their early age and have shared great stories of how it really helped build their communication skills and also how it helped them understand what it takes to offer a great customer service, a function in business that can often make or break a deal for companies.

Hope this helps.

Madhu

Madhumitha recommends the following next steps:

Go to a nearby theatre or super market and enquire about any help they may need with counter sales.
