what is the best way to learn the basics of painting

Art school is a great place to get the basics but art schools can be expensive. There are a lot of resources on youtube and other e-learning sites like linkedin/learning and udemy.

With the age of the internet I would definitely recommend checking on Youtube for short instructional videos on painting techniques, but you can also go to your local library and check out some books. There are lots of 'copy the masters" types books out there that give you step by step instructions, and tell you what kinds of brushes and paints to use, how to clean and maintain them etc. There is no need to go to school to learn how to paint.
