Hi Jazmin,

I applaud you for your initiative and being proactive with your job search! The legal working age in the US is 14 - so now is the time to start researching positions that would be a good match for your skills and interests. Customer service jobs are a great way to enhance your soft skills and expand your network.

Babysitting, dog walking, gardening - these are great options as well. Good luck!

Dwayne’s Answer

Usually you can't work for company until you are 16. I would suggest that you work for yourself. Both of my sons owned their own company. One knocked door-to-door and offered to wash the exterior windows for homeowners when he was 15. Usually he did pretty well because he was a lot cheaper than a local window washing business. My other son started his business when he was 13. He went door-to-door and offered to spray paint the house address number on the curb of a home. NEVER, EVER go into someone's home. Based on your age and current laws, selling your labor door-to-door is your best bet. Find a need in your community. The fact that you are 13 also helps with the "cute factor". Most people want to help young entrepreneurs. It is hard to get motivated to knock on someone's door. It can be a little scary an make you nervous. BUT, if you are sincerely interested in earning money, this is your best bet. In the UK, you could offer exterior window cleaning, working in someone's garden, washing someone's car, scooping dog poo or any number of ideas. Ask around and find that niche where people call you.

Bob’s Answer

Hi Jazmin - the legal working age in the US is 14 so there should be a number of options for you - but i would encourage you to think about what you like as a starting point. A few things that come to mind:

  1. Customer Service/retail jobs: Working in store, coffee shop, etc. Do you like helping people? Are you friendly? Could you manage a cash register?
  2. Are you creative? Do you make things? Are there things you could make that people would buy?
  3. Is there a family business you could help with?
  4. Odd jobs: dog walking, babysitting, cleaning, etc.

I always loved music and got a job in the local record store when I was a teenager, it was cool!

Bob recommends the following next steps:

Really think about what you like doing and where you like spending your time and see if there are opportunities in that area.
