Richard’s Answer

Hi Isiah, I think some of the best career changes after been when I went into a new field that I had no experience in. Training can vary by the company and the job. If you are someone who loves to learn you will gain so much from this. I have a degree in Communications and I have spent some time in data analytics, Human Resource support, Executive Development, and Talent Management. All of which I had no skills in. My best advice for you would be to always be learning on the job. Even when you become an expert in your job there is still something new you can learn. Also, take every opportunity you are able to. I find that hiring managers are willing to hire for a good fit on the team and teach skills rather than just for skills.

Simeon’s Answer

It can be overwhelming going into a field that you do not have previous training or experience in. The best thing you can do is make friends who you can trust and reach out to when you are confused or have a question. Don't try to hit your head against a wall until you understand something. It's much more efficient to be communicative about any obstacles you're facing before they result in lost time.

Kathryn’s Answer

Hi Isaiah!  I think you're asking about training after your get a job in a field that you have never been in.  I have done that several times over my work lifespan.  If you are a person who likes to learn new things, it is fantastic!  I can't even express how much fun it is to get into an industry you've never imagined yourself in.  You meet people you'd never have met, think about things you'd never have thought of and learn things you didn't even know you needed to know.  It is really wonderful.  I'd encourage you to take as much training as you can and enjoy your work life - you spend too much of your time there to not be happy.  then work hard, anticipate your customers' needs (Internal AND external)  and reap the benefits.  Good luck to you!

Kathryn recommends the following next steps:

Ask for informational interviews with people in fields you're considering. Be ready with questions and an open mind!
