The work can be hard, dangerous, people can be difficult... but you can make a respectable living and go home with a sense of accomplishment.
You look hard enough every career has a fault and has its advantages... but if you enjoy what you do you’ll be more at peace with your life and where it’s headed.

Some things to consider are the working conditions. I do structural steel welding, but have also done custom work in shops. With structural welding, you work in the elements. I have welded in wind, rain, below freezing temperatures, and in the summer heat. You are working with metal, and the metal gets hot when you are welding, so burns are common. Also, there are sharp edges so cuts are common. Grinding ruins your clothes, and grinding dust ends up in the washing machine which will make your wife unhappy. You will be lifting heavy parts and working in uncomfortable positions, back problems will be common. Depending on what you are welding, you will be breathing in a lot of smoke and grinding dust.
Some advantages is a lot of the younger generations do not want to get into skilled trade positions, so the experts predict there will be a shortage of welders in the coming years so you should always be able to find a job, and I imagine salaries will go up if there is a shortage or quality welders.
