José Carlos’s Answer

Hi Jennifer,

It depends on the company and industry. For example, tech companies usually provide food and snacks as part of their benefits, while public companies usually don't. That said, when a company provides it, they usually advertise it in their website, so I would recommend to go check in the company's website you are interested in!

Kim’s Answer

Jennifer,

A lot has to do with the size of the company, type of company, etc. I have seen snacks and drinks provided in law offices. Food establishments tend to give their employees a discount. Tech companies tend to provide a range of perks not found elsewhere, including game rooms! I doubt truck drivers or assembly line employees get free meals, but, I could be wrong! Even if the employer provides meals, it may be that it is something you don't want. Or, honestly, it really is nice to physically leave the worksite to refresh!

Your question is actually part of a much larger question! And that has to do with perks, and evaluating the total value of the benefit package you are being provided, as opposed to just looking at salary. If you visit payscale.com and select "evaluate a job offer" it will run you through a whole list of things- free parking, on-site daycare, etc. These things have value to you only if you will use them!

For example, let's say you are using this job as a stepping stone, and don't intend to stay. Even if the on-site daycare is free, you don't want to get your child started in that program, and then have them endure the stress of changing schools. Or, maybe you won't use the gym.

I encourage you to look at the above website. I believe you will find it insightful.

Sarah’s Answer

Hi Jennifer!

It depends on the size and type of the company you are working at. Many large offices provide snacks, coffee, water, but not always! Some companies with great perks may even provide lunch. If this is something that is important to you, I encourage you to look at the benefits on the companies website.

Sarah recommends the following next steps:

Check out the company's website to see what benefits are included.

Eva’s Answer

It depends on the company. I work at a tech company and we do not get free meals, snacks, or drinks, but we do have a variety of options to buy. I would not try to filter your job search by companies that only provide free food. That will severely limit your career.

Simeon’s Answer

We only get free snacks or drinks at work. Occasionally, a manager or higher might pay for everyone to eat, but it's more of a favor or kindness than an expectation. The exception is when we travel; then, we get have daily budgeted allowance to eat meals from given to us by the company.

Rachel’s Answer

It definitely depends on the company. Some companies do provide lunch, but most that I have experienced do not. We may have team lunches once in a while, though. My company does provide snacks in our kitchens (usually 4-5 options) plus coffee, tea, hot cocoa and slushies.

Monica’s Answer

Hi Jennifer,

It depends on the company you work for. If you are part of a company that provides food for their employees for free, at a discount or full price.

Best of luck!

Monica recommends the following next steps:

Take a look at the company's perks to see if meals are included.
