Several peers of mine work as designers for Honda; mostly Mechanical Engineers, one Electrical and one Industrial Engineering major, but all took classes focusing on industrial applications. To be honest, I don't know how or why someone would become an M.E. without taking industrial applications-based courses, so maybe that point is redundant, but M.E. seems to be where it's at.
Now, what they do for Honda is design almost everything except the actual body form. Their work certainly influences the body design, but they aren't the people who decide what the new Accord is going to look like for this year's model. They design the safety, electrical, motor/tranny systems.
If you're more interested in aesthetic design, you might find graphic design more interesting or worthwhile. If you're more hands-on, I'd suggest learning some basic auto-body work, learning how to weld, and finding a shop where they're open to you developing in that line of work. I've got a good friend who in his mid-20s effectively started his own shop doing custom hot-rods, choppers, etc, and he learned to weld towards the end of highschool.
What's more, there's no reason why you couldn't do auto-body work while starting your school studies.

If you are interested in engineering vehicles then you could become a mechanical, electrical, automotive, computer engineer to do that. On the other hand, if you are interested in designing the way vehicle look like then you need to go to design school and specialize in transportation. The schools that offer it are scarce. The link below for helping with that issue.
