Good Question and know that as a teen starting out, you are not expected to have all your answers to what you want to study or do right away. Start by thinking about things you like to do and subject areas that interest you or skills that you already are good at. Do you like to work with people, animals? Do you like to create things/work with your hands? Are you artistic, social, enterprising? Are you good in the STEM areas (science, technology, engineering, math)? Do you like to problem solve and figure things out? As you narrow down the list you can then also see about asking your school guidance counselor about taking a career assessment test. You can also ask those you trust what they see that you are currently good at and if they have some recommendations for you based on current schoolwork, activities, summer jobs, volunteer engagements, etc. Just be patient with yourself as you explore and try things out and find your passion to go after.

Hi Emily. Guess what? You are not alone!! By a long shot. Virtually everyone thinks about what they want to do. In fact so many people are trying to figure out what career is best for them, there is a book about about it! It's called What Color Is Your Parachute for Teens. It's all about helping the reader figure out what their passions are and how to seek those in the work place.

Good read. Try finding a copy at a library.

Good luck!

Donna’s Answer

Emily, what a great question. A lot of us were in the same situation graduating high school. I came from a law enforcement family, so entering college I went for a criminal justice degree. I never finished that degree and switched to business management where I got my Bachelors degree.

Try to find something you are passionate about. Do you want to help people like the medical field? Do you want to help make a difference in the world like working for a non-profit? Or are you passionate about working with your hands like construction. Keep an open mind.
