Does welding pay as good as they say?

I'm 21 and planning on joining the welding business. I plan on using welding as a stepping stone to make a business. Would welding be a good job to save up money and build an investment? #money

Welding pays very well as a trade however most welders I know get stuck and never make it to the next level of pay as they get older. Dont get caught in the trap of having above average pay in your 20s and 30s then having below average pay in your 40s and 50s. Your idea of starting your own business should keep you out of that trap. Also If you want to take it up a notch after you are in welding look into Underwater Welding. If you like to Scuba Dive and you are a good welder you could double or triple your pay.

Scott recommends the following next steps:

Learn to Weld across all disciplines. Arc, Mig, Tig and Tourch
If you are interested in Underwater Welding go ahead and get PADI certified now in Diving and become an Advanced Open Water Diver.

Javier’s Answer

Welding is an excellent trade to learn.  There is a great opportunity to make a great living as a welder.  If you are smart with your money then yes you can definitely use it as a stepping stone to grow it into your own business.  Welders in Texas and West Texas for that matter are definitely in demand with great starting pay.
