Kiyonna,

First, since we are in the same city. . . There is absolutely nothing wrong with UTSA, and commuting. School is expensive. Law school is more expensive. Watch your money wisely.

What to take in college? Yes, whatever interests you! Law schools seek to create a diverse student body. So, think about what area of law you may be interested in, and take courses in that area. Computer crimes? Corporate acquisitions and mergers? Medical malpractice?

As an example, if you are handling a claim for damages in a traffic accident fatality, you will need to understand the factors involved. Type of surface? Asphalt. New or old? new. Braking distance? Wet or dry? Reaction time? Lighting? Condition of vehicle? Brakes - new or old? Tire tread?

Not every lawyer or client can afford to hire experts. And even if you can, you still need to be able to understand this stuff well enough to discuss it with the expert on the stand and make your closing arguments.

That being said, many lawyers never go to court. Some are drafting contracts, wills, corporate documents, etc. Others do a lot of negotiating to settle out of court.

Regardless of your major, check to see if the school has a Pre-Law student advisor, and and Law related student organizations. Get involved, and try to get to positions of leadership/responsibility. Consider other organizations as well. Student newspaper?

Beyond the major, try to take other classes that will help you. Use your electives wisely. Get a basic understanding of accounting, speech, debate, intense writing, critical thinking, etc. And Definitely take LOGIC ( It should be in the Philosophy dept). When you have choices as to which classes to take to satisfy the general degree requirements (English, Math, Science, Art) take the ones that will be the most beneficial to you, not the ones "everyone else" is taking. Do NOT plan your schedule to have classes with your friends - look at the long-term picture.

Also, look into joining Toastmasters/Toastmistresses. There are several chapters in San Antonio. It will give you the opportunity to hone your public speaking skills.

Finally, while in college, master time management, note taking, and studying skills. Push yourself to stay current in all your classes. Read the assigned readings prior to class, and review your notes within 24 hrs after class.

Hope this has helped!

Best of luck to you!

Kim

Paul V.’s Answer

Graduate from high school with the best grades you can. Earn a bachelor’s degree in any field (one that interests you) and get involved on campus and in the community. Take and do well on the LSAT (Law School Admissions Test) and apply to the law school of your choice. Study for three years and earn a Juris Doctor degree then pass the state bar examination in your state. Once all that is done, you’ll be a lawyer.

Paul V. recommends the following next steps:

Study hard and do well in your high school classes.
Attend a university or college of your choice and earn a bachelor’s degree in an area that interests you.
Take and do well on the LSAT test.
Apply to the law school of your choice.
Graduate with a Juris Doctor degree.
