Dallas’s Answer

On the road union welder makes more money but 20 years later it’s hell on family...

Tig welding in refineries, nuke plants etc make the $$$. Jobs last for weeks sometimes months then you have to typically travel to the next site.

I’m certified in mig and stick welding, non union, and typically work at our shop nearby. It’s not as much pay but I enjoy the fact I can be with my family. Most the road guys struggle very much with a stable home life. Also several of the guys on the road seem to struggle with drug/alcohol abuse. I have entertained other job offers with travel but I enjoy a decent living and stay close to home.

Money is always good, but consider carefully the here it leads. You can easily be traveling welder make big bucks and do exceedingly well.

Kbg’s Answer

The answer to that question lies in the type of person you are. In each application of welding, tig, mig, stick, you have specialties. A lot of people like to chase the money and pursue under water welding. Well if you aren't accustomed to being in the water and get sea sick quick or often then that's probably not an avenue that is going to make a lot of money for you.
Pipelining. If you don't like being away from home and have never worked on a roof in the summer and had to deal with the elements that might not be the job for you.
The type can pay well, but if you are no good at it then the pay will not meet expectations.
The short answer to this question is the type of welding that you enjoy doing and the one in which you hone your skills in.
What do I like to do? Do I mind sweating? Am I an outside guy? Can I sit in a booth for 10-12 hours a day? Do I like to build things? Am i a precision, pay attention to the smallest detail? Or am I impatient and just want to burn it out and not worry about the minutiae?
