What can I do in high school to prepare me for a potential career in veterinary medicine?

I am a sophomore in high school in Boston, and I was wondering what I can do inside and outside of the classroom in order to prepare me for a potential career as a veterinarian. I understand that getting into vet schools is very difficult, so I would like to know what activities I can participate in to better my chances of getting into one, and pursuing my dream career. #veterinarian #veterinary #veterinary-medicine #animals #veterinary-technician

Rob’s Answer

The best preparation within school is to take as many science and math classes as possible - especially biology and chemistry. Outside of the classroom, find a veterinary clinic where you can volunteer or work. The very best thing you can learn right now are the things you DO NOT want to do, either within veterinary medicine or otherwise.

Volunteer at your local shelter. Talk to your local vet clinics and see if they will let you volunteer some afternoons or weekends in the clinic. Help you get some real life first hand experience. Extracurricular activities are good to have but I don’t think they matter for vet school. Animal experience of any kind do count. There are programs where you can apply for summers in animal care positions. I’m sure you can locate some by searching on Google. I don’t remember names off the top of my head. But just get as much exposure as you can while still a HS student so you can know for sure this is what you want to do. Loving animals is not enough for this profession.
