Kim’s Answer

I make a difference in peoples' lives! My customers come from all walks of life. Being unjustly terminated after 20 yrs of loyalty, or let go because they missed too much work caring for an ill family member, or laid off, or . . .?

They quickly lose their self-esteem, which all too often is associated with their jobs. The family falls apart. Car breaks down. The world starts caving in on them. Bills are piling up.

The most frequent customer comment card I get is "thank you for treating me like a person, and not just another number." I am very down to earth with my customers, I don't act like a bureaucrat. I give them encouragement as they go about getting their lives back together. THEY do the rest.

The smiles, the thank yous, the successes. . . that makes it all worthwhile!

Dr. Ray’s Answer

Dear Mirela,

I apologize for taking so long to respond to your question. As a clinical psychologist I unfortunately deal with many individuals in emotional pain. This can be difficult at times, but the rewarding aspect is being able to help them alleviate their distress and live happier lives. For the past 20 years or so I have specialized in psychotherapy with adult survivors of childhood trauma. Many of them have been able to change their lives dramatically, for example getting out of toxic relationships, giving up substance use and self injury, and just feeling happy. Many of these people are quite courageous and I feel fortunate to know them.

In looking at the other responses to your question I notice that there is a theme of being helpful to others. People whose main goal in life is getting rich are in my opinion missing out on some of life's most rewarding experiences.

My only advice it to choose a path with heart.

As a User Experience Designer, the most fulfilling aspect of my career is representing users in software development. As a user advocate, I ’m responsible for making sure software is instinctively usable by people to inform, complete tasks or entertain with the goal that the experience delights.

Pete’s Answer

Hi Mireia - so I am a team manager in a corporate hi-tech organisation, managing a team of people spread all over Europe. The best bit about my job is working with people of different nationalities, from different countries, with different perspectives and ways of working. I learn something every day from each of them....and hopefully they learn from me.
As the snr lead in the team, I also really enjoy bringing in new hires from universities, helping them to develop through in their first jobs - very rewarding, especially when they leave the team and move onto other things. Seeing people grow is wonderful.

Katie’s Answer

The most fulfilling part of my career is working with others who are passionate, kind, caring and SMART. I love that each and every day I get the opportunity to partner with individuals who teach me new ideas, concepts and perspectives. As I've evolved within my career and added a few years to my age, I've determined that truly listening and understanding the problem that needs to be solved is key to then building/developing and planning on an execution strategy. Being able to get out of your own way and listen, partner and understand others has been most fulfilling - it provides me insight outside of my viewpoint - and that is needed to be successful.

Kimberly’s Answer

The most fulfilling aspect of my position is when my employees are happy. Being the foundation for any employee who needs help or doesn't feel their best, I work to assist those employees to make sure they are receiving the necessary attention and they are satisfied with their work. As someone in HR, its important to me when my work has a positive effect on someone. Hearing positive comments about a new program providing the correct guidance or seeing employee satisfaction scores increase gives me that sense of fulfillment in my position. I know I am in the right career path because of this.

Kimberly’s Answer

The most fulfilling aspect of my career is having the opportunity to help others. Working in HR, it seems like all I would do is administration for employees. However, I am here to provide employees the support they need to tackle the day. I work to develop training programs for them to learn how to be efficient in their positions, provide tools to help their subordinates and overall making sure they are engaged at work. Seeing others thrive at work has made my position fulfilling.

Radiology is an exciting and dynamic field. For me personally, the procedures are the most exciting. For example, we recently introduced Y-90 radioembolization at our hospital. This provides a new opportunity to treat liver cancers and prolong lives.

John’s Answer

Mireia,

The most fulfilling parts of my job are:
1. Mentoring others. I love the opportunity to help others on their journeys to success. As a manager, sometimes those opportunities come through my employees, but sometimes they come from other people at my college, graduate school, high school, or church. I believe that each of us has a drive at the center of our life that is what helps us be happy and feel engaged and fulfilled in our work. Discovering this drive/passion and then applying it to the work you do will help you to feel fulfilled and enjoy your work. Mentoring others to help them find or apply their passions is fun for me! PassionNotAProduct
2. I like to improve things. My passion is improvement. I love to look at something and think about ways to improve it in order to make it more efficient or effective. This can range from designing new training classes to redefining a process for my associates. If I'm improving the world around me, then I'm usually very happy.

John recommends the following next steps:

Discover your drive
Apply your passion to where you are
Align your life to your passion

Shawn’s Answer

The most fulfilling part of my job is that I get to see the impact of what I do on the business. I am a training manager and I was a trainer and developer previously. Being able see your work come to life through a new hire that was able to answer a question or seeing people complete a curriculum I created shows me the value of what I do everyday. There are people that come into the company with no understanding of what we do and within weeks they are able to assist customers by answering questions and resolving issues. Throughout the years I have seen some of my new hires move into other roles and they always thank me for providing them with the foundational skills to get where they are today.

Knowing that you helped someone else achieve their dreams of being successful provides me with so much fulfillment. Now, I manage a team of trainers with the same goals. Sometimes we get together and talk about our accomplishments and the amount of people we engage and impacted as well as some of the different paths they taken.
