To become a cosmetologist you must be licensed in the state of Indiana after completion of 1500 hours at a cosmetology school. You are not allowed to cut hair or any other cosmetology options without having completion of technical school. Once you have completed the program that’s when you could be taught by job shadowing at a licensed salon

Here in Florida, you can assist while you’re in school. However, pay is dependent on the shop. Some places will pay you minimum wage, some places it’s just tips. What you learn is also up to you, people are people and we hair artists are typically very extra. Some are more eager to teach you things than others. Those who can’t wait to help you will do so, you will learn a lot. But
if you end up with someone who is not as willing to teach, just pay attention to what they’re doing. Watch the color tubes your licensed professional is choosing, see if you can figure out why they chose what they did. Write it down then consult with your instructor.
Good luck to you, work hard, never stop learning.

Gloria’s Answer

You just have to make sure that the person who is training you is certified through the state board of barbering and cosmetology of which ever state you reside in. Or if you're working, and your training is in an actual school, they will work with you to accommodate your needs. Then however long it takes you to get certified and licensed is up to you.

I would say it all depends on where you live. Some salons will hire beauty school students to help in assisting, but they won’t allow you to provide services. You may be able to help with small things like shampooing. I know that’s the case here in Massachusetts. It’s a good way to get your foot in the door while you’re learning in school.
