Hello Destiny,
For a decade and a half, I immersed myself in the vibrant world of cosmetology. It's an incredible career path, especially for those blessed with a spark of creativity! It's a role that requires a friendly demeanor and a natural curiosity. I can honestly say it was a thrilling journey, and as a cosmetologist, you become so much more than just a beauty expert; you transform into a confidant, a friend, a fashion guru, and an advisor.
Firstly, it's crucial to determine your area of interest within the broad field of cosmetology. Do you wish to specialize in hair cutting, color treatments, skincare, or nail care? In cosmetology school, you'll receive a well-rounded education that touches upon all these areas. The theory classes will introduce you to the technical aspects and the chemistry behind beauty treatments. However, it's during the practical, hands-on sessions where you'll truly discover your strengths and areas for improvement.
Upon graduating, I strongly recommend starting your career at a franchise salon. These establishments already have a solid client base and offer introductory training programs, which are perfect for supporting your ongoing learning journey right after school. They provide a safe environment for you to conquer any initial fears about working with "real paying clients". Also, don't hesitate to absorb wisdom from your experienced colleagues. Franchise salons like Great Clips, Hair Cuttery, and Hair Masters are known for welcoming fresh graduates with open arms.
Once you've honed your skills and gained confidence, you might consider moving to high-end salons that offer more specialized services. Your pay structure can range from a combination of hourly rates and commission to purely commission-based. As you build a loyal clientele, you might even consider renting a chair in a salon and operating as an independent cosmetologist.
One piece of advice that has always stuck with me is the importance of presentation. Remember, you are a living testament to your craft. It's crucial to always look well-groomed from head to toe, as clients often choose their stylist based on their personal appearance. Your hair should be a shining example of your professional skills. Sometimes, you may need to "fake it till you make it", because first impressions are lasting ones.

If you are interested in a career in Cosmetology it would benefit you to check with your counselor to see if your school offers cosmetology courses. Starting while in HS will allow you to see the many different aspects of cosmetology and decide if there is an area you would like to focus on once you complete the courses. If your school doesn’t offer courses you could contact your local cosmetology school as many of them offer night classes for both full time or part time students. Also, be sure you ask them about financial aide that the school may provide which may make it easier for you to attend.
Do your research on local schools
