Sounds like you have a great attitude and eager to learn! Best thing to do is try to find someone with a welder and some know how and try it for yourself. I learned to weld on the job the guys could see I was a hard worker and willing to learn.
People underestimate “fitting” the ability to read a tape measure, and read blue prints. If you can read a tape, understand how to use soapstone, squares, center punches you will have a great advantage. Also welders get paid one rate but if you are a “welder/fitter” you typically will earn more. Must be able to “find center” of measurements.
Wear your personal protective equipment (ppe) at ALL times. It helps if you show up with steel toe boots, safety glasses, ear plugs and at least a bucket of tools. It helps if the tools ARE NOT new but in great shape. You don’t want to look like you just went to harbor freight loaded up and showed up for the job.

Math skills. You don’t have to be a mathematician but like the other guy mentioned learn how to measure. Know your fractions and be able to convert to your basic decimals. Layout skills are important. A railing company is a good place to start. You will learn how to use hand tools and measure. You will learn how to layout , cut and weld. –
