Prerna’s Answer

Hi Christian,

I am not sure I understand the question completely but I will try to answer my best .

If you are asking how long it takes to become a systems engineer. Well the answer is generally an undergraduate engineering degree is a 4 year course post which you can start working as an engineer with an IT company. Most likely you would get an entry level individual contributor role and then further based on how you develop your skills, you can move to become a systems engineer. Or you can chose to do a Masters degree in engineering to get more focused knowledge on your field of study , that takes another 2 years. You can do masters after or along with the job too.

If you are asking how long is a career duration for a systems engineer, well that totally depends on you. How you mould your career and how you take care of upskilling yourself and staying relevant all the times. Keep learning more and more on whatever comes your way and you can continue your career for as long as you want.

Hope i was able to answer your question.

Yuichi’s Answer

Hi Christian,

It is like a swimming. You can learn how to swim very fast, but becoming a top swimmer is another story.

It takes several months at least to learn the basic programming. After it, you can start writing programs and if you have a great vision and idea, your program can be very valuable to people. From programming point of view, you can be a basic programmer pretty easily. But it is just a beginning. There are so much to learn to become a professional programmer. There are so many other skills to learn to become a specialist or an architect. It usually takes several years to become an esteemed engineer. The computer engineering world is moving so fast that you must keep learning new things to just stay where you are.

You can spend as many years as you want fo the career, because there always are things to learn, things to try, things to find. But I believe it's worth your efforts and time. A computer engineer can change the world.

Yuichi recommends the following next steps:

Buy a programming text and start writing simple codes.

Wayne’s Answer

Hi Christian!

Systems Engineering is an exciting and very rewarding field. Systems engineering demands a firm grasp of both business and engineering. As
system engineers’ skills are beneficial to nearly every industry, most professionals have some sort of specialty, as do many degree programs. Anyone considering a career in systems engineering (SE) should begin with an accredited bachelor’s degree in systems, industrial, or another engineering discipline. A bachelor’s degree is a minimum requirement for most entry-level systems engineers. Useful majors include systems, informational systems, industrial engineering or computer engineering. Some systems engineers obtain a degree in their desired field and a minor in systems. Most of these programs are 4-year programs.

Good luck!

Nicole’s Answer

Hi christian G. I see that you posted this question a little while ago so I hope my answer to you (or others who may read this response) is still helpful.

Sharing a perspective that may seem a little odd. I encourage folks who are interested in the technology field (including engineering) to embrace the idea that a career is a journey. More specifically, while one can count the number of years to complete a degree or high-level certification, it is important to understand that the "how long will it take" question may include an answer like "it doesn't stop". Many folks who are successful in these fields are also life-long learners, that is, they are always interested in understanding what is new and why it matters. For sure, employers follow these types of trends as well.

Hope you find this added perspective helpful. Best of luck to you!
