Kassandra’s Answer

"Computer Technician" is a fancy term for "tech support". This is a grueling and generally thankless job ... and usually pays low, even in big companies. And I've found even lower for women vs men in the same role. (Speaking from my own experience.) It shouldn't but it can - some companies are wising up to this and fixing it but it's a slow process.

Computer techs will always be needed. But it might do you better to look into computer science, artificial intelligence, data science, etc

Kassandra recommends the following next steps:

Look into computer science - programming. There are lots of free courses online.
Do some research about job roles in the artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer science fields as well as their salary ranges. Get an idea of the kinds of skillsets you will need to get in front of this

Stan’s Answer

Depends on the country. For example, in USA, labor is expensive and folks just but a new computer. In many countries, its expensive to replace. So people prefer to fix it

Bryon’s Answer

As more and more systems become automated, more and more technicians will be required to maintain these systems. No one can predict the future, but it seems likely that technicians will be needed for many more years.

If you have an opportunity to do so, consider developing your skillset to allow you transition into a more technically complex or more specialized role (e.g. software engineer, hardware engineer, network engineer, data scientist, database administrator). Since you seem to be worried about future career prospects, continuing to grow your skillset might reduce the likelihood that you'll end up in a career path with a downward trajectory.
