Tammy’s Answer

Hi Tanner,
I think a university degree is always a plus and in some cases is a screening question for positions. There are many ways to approach getting a degree. My favorite approach is 'have someone else pay for it'. How to do this? Many companies are looking for employees that have good IT Networking skills (including my company). Those companies have tuition assistance programs that can help pay for your formal education. Consider starting at an entry level job (which may not require a degree ) in larger companies and take advantage of their programs. As you grow your education, you grow your skills and learn more about business. This sets you up for success.

I've had a few friends who regretted not have a degree and felt it held them back. My suggestion to them was that they could go back to school part-time at anytime and continue their education.

Good luck!

While a degree doesn't make you any smarter or more qualified for any position, some employers have a bachelor degree as a minimum requirement to even get an interview. College isn't for everyone, but if you want to go into the IT field it would benefit you if you can get a degree.

Tahoora’s Answer

Definitely ,

First of all, you need to know the basic and advance knowledge of the field you are passionate about.

Self study is always useful and also lots of video training is also available. However, going to the university is not just about studying and learning through books.

Is more about communication, finding your interests, being expert on tools, finding opportunities to find a job and extending your relation cycle.

Working with others is far better than study alone, self study does not provide that.

Finding a group / person to work with for a long time is not easy.university helps you to be in such environment .

I found my best friends there.

Got to know about my interests there, cause you can experience different topics , that you have never thought about.

companies tend to attract experts with university degree, it shows that you had a goal in you life and accomplished it .

You learn discipline and best way of communication there.

Tahoora recommends the following next steps:

make sure you chose a correct field of study , by asking people graduated and are working in the same field.
choose a university which interests you more in , in terms of facilities , environment and research

Denise’s Answer

Hi Tanner! This is a good question that many of us ask. I think it really depends on your interests and what you want to do in the long run. Knowing what you are interested or passionate about is the first step and you already figured that out. Given that you want to become experienced in IT and computers, I think that a degree could be helpful since it gives you a bit more of a credential and a more structured learning environment (even though there are classes online for you to take and learn at your own pace)! I would suggest doing this first and then deciding if you want to apply to a university. Best of luck!
