Going into construction can be a well paid industry, if you are okay with working long days on your feet. Take a look at which colleges have good construction management programs if you're interested.

Julian,
Skilled Trades positions can pay very well. These include plumbers, electricians, masonary workers, heavy equipment operators, painters, etc. I used to work in the Workforce office, and had many construction workers for clients.
There are three things to remember in the construction industry.
- there will be bad weather days, and, you likely will not get paid for them. So, you will need to learn to manage your money well, planning for the weather days.
- some construction workers are frequently having to look for work. They might go work on a project, like building a new school, and, when their part is done, they are out of work. If you work for the larger companies, they may have another project for you. Or you might need to go looking.
- Safety. Safety is extremely important. But, accidents can, and do, happen. If you are out of work due to an accident, you may or may not be getting paid while out of work. Even if you do get paid, it will usually not be full salary. Therefore, you want to purchase "disability insurance" to help you through those times.
Construction workers like their jobs. They get to move around, get to work by themselves or with a crew, without supervisors standing over their shoulders.
hope this has helped!
