Hi Aimaya,

Thank you for such a wonderful question. You may or may not be aware that there are many different types of psychologists; some see patients in private practice, some work in hospitals, and some don't see patients at all but research or teach. I'm a type you have probably never heard of; I only work with teens who have learning disabilities and also have some sort of mental health issue that may be temporary or permanent such as anxiety, depression, grief, or simply have a difficult time at home or school. I work with the teen, parents, siblings, and the school . None of my days are really typical, but I usually begin by seeing patients and their parents in my office. I may then have a meeting with a school or go to visit another patient in the hospital. I also work closely with psychiatrists and social workers, so I spend a lot of time on the phone. Proper documentation is extremely important, so a portion of my day is dedicated to patient notes and creating treatment plans. It's not unusual for an emergency to occur in which I go to the hospital or to the police station. I also do a lot of public speaking to inform other professionals about the challenges that teens face in their daily lives. I hope I've given you some idea of my day. It's always busy and never the same, but one of the reasons I love my job.

There are many types of psychologists, and the day can look very different for the various kinds.

I am another type of psychologist you've probably never heard of... I am an Industrial/Organizational Psychologist!

...a what now?!?!?

Industrial and Organizational Psychologists study human behavior in the workplace!

My typical day currently is spent figuring out how employees can do their jobs more efficiently. I used to write tests to select the best employees, which involved me having to go and observe the behaviors of the workers... I went to factories, air traffic control towers at airports, and all sorts of placing just to watch people work! It's not all fun and games though... it's a lot of math and statistics, because measuring behavior is just like measuring anything else.
