Tony’s Answer

It really depends on your interests. If you are interested in big picture technologies - Cloud, Data mining - IBM and Google probably stand out. If I was starting out now (instead of 43 years ago), I think working with technology to change the world with IBM and Watson would be really cool.

I started out when personal PCs were just coming out. So I am a software developer for a major insurance company. So, in my world, Microsoft is the big player along with Intel.

Tony recommends the following next steps:

There are obstacles to getting into the good Cloud technology jobs. Nothing insurmountable just more than pure programming. Discipline and a significant investment in education are needed. You need to become one of the best in whatever field you choose. The really good jobs go to the ready and those that can show they paid their dues.
In Personal/Company technologies the education barrier is much lower. A couple of classes in programming or networking and you can get in the door. Where you go from there is usually based on added education (more than the next guy), attention to detail (do it right the first time), and a willingness to try something harder. To be honest, I promote more on the third point, but I do know that there are people who swear by the second.

William’s Answer

This is a difficult question to answer as so many key people in IT history. Some you may have heard of are Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, but they based their work on the giants in IT that came before them. There will always be the latest and the greatest, but they could never do what they do without those before them i.e. Vint Cerf (can look him up).
