Rebecca’s Answer

I work at a large corporate company and my team is responsible for supporting others in accomplishing their goals. A large part of my job consists of helping others identify problems in their process, or areas for improvement, as well as formulating and implementing a solution. Listening skills, being able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, both in person and now virtually are all critical skills to the business world.

Wenny’s Answer

What a great question!

I've had several different roles over my business career, and the skills that have served me very well throughout include strong communications skills (written and verbal), teaming and partnership, agility, and creative problem solving.

These skills are fairly consistent across the answers you've already received, but I would encourage you to think about how you're enhancing yours not only in your academic career, but also how you're refining them in your extracurricular activities. There are great opportunities to enhance leadership and teamwork skills in everything from sports to extracurricular activities you may be involved in, and even ways to practice your presentation skills in local speech and speaking clubs.

Bryan’s Answer

While each industry has skills that may be specific to that industry, below are some characteristics / skills that I have found apply across most if not all successful businesses:

1. Time Management / Prioritization: There is often more work that could be done that time allows, successful people are able to identify the most important / high impact work and they get those done first.

2. Communication Skills (verbal, written, non-verbal): The ability to effectively communicate with others - including people of varying backgrounds, personalities, etc.

3. Adaptability: ability to overcome change / adversity

4. Collaboration / Teamwork: ability to work with others - particularly people who are different than you

5. Hard Work: be willing to put in extra effort - never stop learning!

Simeon’s Answer

Some of the skills that we have to exercise on a daily basis as auditors is an attention to detail and systems-level thinking. For our job, we have to develop an understanding of how a business prevents risks and if those means are actually successful. We also have to think critically about if our testing is sufficient to demonstrate that the significant risks have been prevented or mitigated.

James Constantine’s Answer

Dear Joey,

I am proficient in two technical areas: nutrition and dietetics, and computer programming.

To truly shine in a business role, it's necessary to master a diverse set of skills. Here's what you need:

Effective Communication: In the corporate arena, clear and persuasive communication is key. This means being able to express your thoughts convincingly, both verbally and in writing. You should be able to interact effectively with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders.

Problem-Solving Prowess: Every day, businesses face new challenges. You need to be capable of recognizing these issues and devising solutions. This demands critical thinking, creativity, and a knack for analyzing data and information.

Leadership Qualities: If you're handling teams or projects, leadership skills are vital. You should be adept at setting objectives, assigning tasks, giving feedback, and inspiring your team members.

Organizational Abilities: In order to juggle multiple projects and deadlines, you need to be extremely organized. This includes setting priorities, making schedules, and keeping precise records.

Technical Expertise: Depending on your role or industry, you may need specific technical skills. For instance, marketers might need to be proficient in design software or social media platforms, while finance professionals might require expertise in accounting software or financial analysis tools.

Adaptability: The corporate world is always changing, so you need to be flexible. Be open to new ideas and technologies, adjust to changing priorities or market conditions, and stay resilient when facing challenges or setbacks.

Time Management Skills: To be productive and successful in business, you must manage your time effectively. This involves setting priorities, making schedules, minimizing distractions, and staying focused until tasks are completed.
