I know several people from Kentucky who work out of Union Hall 798, Tulsa Oklahoma. By far the most experienced, professional, safe crews to work around. These days that’s what you want.
I agree with you Brother Jones. I’m out of Local 21 Peekskill myself. I would rephrase your response that the UA in general strives for safety of its members

In NJ you have Boilermakers Union Local 28 is a great place to start. Chance to get in to the apprenticeship and work towards becoming a Journeyman in the trade.
Another is the Ironworkers Union Local 399 based in NJ, again you’re able to get in the apprenticeship and work towards becoming a journeyman in the trade.
