I am not an expert in this field, but I have spent a lot of time helping young people explore school/career plans . My initial thought is that your academic approach may depend on your preferred career path -- are you interested in working in a salon, opening your own business, working in theatre/film? I suggest gathering as much information as you can about your options. You may want to try searching the internet and speaking to people in the profession.
For example, I came across this list of 2 and 4 year colleges with programs in make up artistry: http://study.com/make_up_artist_school.html
Another page on the same site said that "[a] bachelor's degree in theater is another option."
I looked at the Montclair State University website and it seems they have a make up artistry certificate program you can get while working on a BA. You may want to call someone at MSU -- and/or at other schools -- to see if you can get some feedback on typical majors.
Good luck!
