Learn all the common techniques, ie. TIG, MIG, stick, oxy-acetylene. It wouldn't be a bad idea to learn some forge welding while you are at it. Using proper PPE and safe operations are the two most important things to learn.

I believe that most entry level jobs will require stick and MIG certificates. The Ironworkers Union might have a program for new welders in your area. I took welding at a community college. The college also provided the space for the certification test.
