How would I go about becoming a certified underwater welder?
I am in school for welding and planning on taking advanced courses. What I would like to know is how one makes the leap from welding to underwater welding.

Hi there Cody! Underwater welding is a very exciting job field - I don't do it myself but I am familiar with it . You will need to learn how to dive in order to be qualified to do this. The best thing I can recommend is look into a school that teaches underwater welding (you will need to go to school for this). Check out www.diversinstitute.edu - you can also call them at 1-888-481-7853. My understanding is that the certification is about 7 months. This particular school is located in Seattle. There are others so maybe think about calling a few schools and see what they recommend. There are scholarships available for some of these programs.
Visit www.diversinstitute.edu - just to learn a little more about programming that is available
Call and speak to an advisor about how to apply and when classes start (often they are on a rolling basis)
Look for other underwater welding certification schools (via Google)

Im looking to do the same thing as I've now been a welder for 14years, I believe you will need to do a commercial diving course, survival course, first aid, and the underwater welding course. If your lucky you can find a course that has all these in it, I found one roughly about 17,000usd which is probably what I'm looking to do
Hope it helps

Hello William,
I was a commercial diver for a couple of years and was certified through Divers Institute of Technology in Seattle, WA for underwater welding. It is an interesting form of welding and i quite enjoyed it. I would caution you however, most commercial diving doesnt involve underwater cutting or welding and theres not a lot of guaranty that you would find underwater welding work once completing school. If you are interested in commercial diving i would recommend DIT in Washington. Hope this helps. If you have questions id be happy to answer them to the best of my ability.
