In life you have to decide where your priorities are. You have to sacrifice and work hard to reach the goals that are important to you, but you also have to know what lines are important to you.
Setting your priorities helps you define how you reach your goals. Also, don't be surprised if your priorities change over time.

When you really want to achieve a goal, you have to be ready to do hard work, persistence, sacrifice, and be patient.
While I do not know what the goal is that you have in mind, two goals that I achieved come to mind.
I wanted to be a college football player at a top school. I had played many other sports, but had only one year of high school football my senior year. While I had junior colleges interested, I wanted to go to a big university that was known for football. I would have to walk-on (meaning I was not a full athletic scholarship). I went to a Big Ten school first. And while training, I hurt my back and ended up leaving after 1-year and did everything I could to stay in shape and get my back healed. Then I transferred to a PAC 10 school (now PAC 12) out west. I worked out every day. I made sure I ate the correct foods. I ran every day. When it seemed like the other students were having fun at parties, I wanted to achieve my goal so bad that I sacrificed those and put in the time to get ready for try-outs. It was hard work, tenacity, sacrifice and I had to really be patient. I did not realize that my dream of achieving my goal would be delayed. I did not give up though. Out of over 100 people that tried out as a walk-on, I was one of two selected. That was just the beginning, but I had made the team. I went through all of spring practice. Trained all summer long, and went through double sessions. Right before our first game, I was injured. While I never got to play in a game, I was proud of the fact that I made the team and got college credit for it. 13 players from that team went to the NFL. It taught me a lot about going above and beyond to achieve a goal. Also, I never succumbed to taking short cuts. Many players took steroids at the time, which affected their health later. I never took them and only ate healthy foods. This experience taught me a lot about achievement. And, I would use what I learned to achieve other goals. The next one I had in my sites was an MBA. I would apply that same work ethic, sacrifice, and patience to achieving that goal. I worked full-time during the weekdays, and for three years I either was at class or in the library at night studying. I even hosted study groups on Saturday mornings. Sometimes it seemed like forever, but I just kept at it and one day I graduated.
In conclusion. Whatever you do, don’t take short cuts. Be prepared to work harder than you ever thought you could. While it may seem like you are missing out on a lot of fun around you, you’re really not. What you learn and the sense of accomplishment is far more fun than what you think you might be missing out on. Be persistent. Keep at it, even when you hit barriers. If you keep at it, you will make breakthroughs that you never thought possible. Be patient. It probably takes longer than you originally thought it would. But, it is worth it. I still apply those same fundamentals to things today. While those experiences were in my younger years, I am still setting goals today. My most recent has been to get back in shape. I am walking, swimming, doing calisthenics and lifting light weights and am down close to 40 pounds.
So, all the best on achieving great things!
