Kalum J,
help desk tech's can work at home, travel to a customer's location or work from an office. I wasn't sure if that was part of your question. Rachel is correct, pretty much every industry has a help desk. The questions I get from our help desk are all over the map, always something new.
I'd like to add that a good help desk tech provides help before issues become problems. At least in my world of software.

The good news is that help desk technicians can work in a variety of industries so the employment outlook for this job is positive! Most companies need someone to troubleshoot their employees' or clients' computer and technical issues. Help Desk Technicians can work in hospitals, tech companies, retail stores, financial institutions and banks, schools, small businesses, and many other places.

A good place to start would be the IT Department of some major companies/employers in your city. You can learn more about this occupation on O*NET online - search for "Computer User Support Specialist" in the occupation search field. It will tell you all about this occupation and you can also find local information for your state and city.

You can advance in this field by obtaining technical certifications such as the CompTIA A+, for example. Best of luck to you!
