Luis’s Answer

I am a Mechanical Engineer and did a Degree in Mechanical Design ... I used to work as a product manager for an Xray table and my work was being a link from our manufacturing line with our suppliers ... some times I had to wear my hat as design engineer and work on manufaturability of the parts to make sure our supply base was able to produce the parts that we needed ... the nature of the job is broad, some times you work on inspecting the quality of parts that were produced outside of the specifications and try to understand how to provide feedback to the manufacturers to make it right the next time ... or even to our product design group to open up unnecessary requirements that might deem a part out of spec when in reality is a functional part ...

John’s Answer

I have worked on the embedded software for avionics hardware in both small, and large companies. Depending on the field many hardware projects will involve programmable logic, micro controllers, and microprocessors. The systems I have worked have all been part of larger vehicles, or assemblies, so a lot of effort is spent breaking down higher level requirements, and determining both implementation, and verification methods.

Bill’s Answer

I have a degree in Electrical Engineering and have been working in the industry for 35 years now, and I love it! Hardware engineering is very broad and allows you to work in many different fields and on many different types of things. I choose to work in the computer industry and even with that specialization I have had the opportunity to work on designing many different elements of computers, and have also chosen to become a leader while staying very technical and close to technology as it continues to evolve. In my career I have designed CPUs, ASICs used as cache and IO controllers, computer motherboards, written microcode / firmware / BIOS / Diagnostics, lead small development teams and large system level teams, lead engineering product development organizations, worked with industry technology partners and am currently a SVP in product development engineering at Dell Technologies. My point in sharing all of this is to show you a real example of the wide variety of things you can do in the hardware engineering field. With a hardware engineering degree (BSEE) you can go in so many directions, you just need to decide what you are passionate about and head in that direction.
