Glenn’s Answer

Drew, Robert is correct that you can build and/or improve things with any engineering degree. The question is what do you like to build and improve. I have experience in mechanical Engineering doing product development for medical devices and consumer electronics. As a Mechanical Engineer, we are responsible for anything that you can physically touch. Electrical Engineers design the electrical circuit boards that are critical in make any product with electronics to work. Software engineers write the code to get the circuits to respond to the user inputs. Civil engineers make sure that the building are constructed in the appropriate way to stay erect based on the location that they building in constructed.

I think you need to decide what you mean by building and designing stuff.

Glenn recommends the following next steps:

What are the types of things that excite you to design, build, and improve
What about those products do you think you want to focus on. Is it the Mechanical Parts, how the circuit works, how the firmware or software works
Reach out to your parents, counselors, or family friends to find people in that field and have an information interview. Prepare questions and see if their career really interests you.

Josh’s Answer

Hi Drew,

I also took an interest into engineering because I liked to build and design. I did a lot of 3D solid modeling in High School and wanted to contine doing that in college because I enjoyed the design aspect of that. I graduated college with an Associate's in CAD/CAM technology and a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering. I definitely felt like mechaincal engineering suited my passion for design.

I'm now working in the manufacturing field. I've been able to stay with the designing I love as well being able to be hands on with production as they build the product. So perhaps maybe Mechanical Engineering is what you're looking for.

Best of Luck!
