Hi Laura,
Thanks for the question! Here are some of the Pros and cons of Cosmetology:
Pros
Financially Rewarding
One of the pros of becoming a cosmetologist is that it can be both financially and emotionally rewarding. Cosmetologists who have developed a large client list and work at a popular salon can make a lot of money. Furthermore, they often have the flexibility to work the hours that they want, which can create a great work/life balance. A cosmetologist spends all their time helping clients look better which makes them more confident and helps them leave satisfied, which can make the job emotionally rewarding as well.
Entrepreneurial Options
Another pro of being a cosmetologist is that it could be a great way to start your own business. Cosmetologists that have been working in the field for a few years, and have developed a large client list, may actually be better off financially by starting their own salon. This is one of the few fields where someone with some skill and a little business sense could easily open up their own practice and start earning enough money to support themselves.
Cons
It Takes Time to Get Started
One of the cons of being a cosmetologist is that it can take a while before they start earning a decent salary. While a cosmetologist can earn a lot of money in their career, most of them don’t start earning sizable incomes until they have been working for at least a few years. It takes some time for a new cosmetologist to build up a client list, and until that happens they depend on referrals and walk-ins into the salon. However, cosmetologists that are good with clients will quickly develop a sizable list of dedicated customers.
It Can Be a Challenge
While there are a lot of positives to being a cosmetologist, one of the things that shouldn’t be underestimated is how challenging it can be at times. Cosmetologists, especially when they are new to the industry, have to work very long days after work and sometimes seven days a week for little money. Furthermore, they will be dealing with customers who demand very high-quality services, which can be very frustrating. However, once you have accepted the challenges of the job, it can be very rewarding.
Hope this helps!

Mignon’s Answer
Hi Laura,
This is a great question and Sachin has answered it very well. I would add that the pros include: the variety of clients and their requests. Some of my favorite services were applying makeup, foil highlights and interesting requests like flat-tops and razor haircuts. I found most clients to be happy to have an hour or two to sit and be pampered, and I enjoyed the challenge of ensuring that I created exactly what they had requested. I do not currently work in the cosmetology industry, but I earned my cosmetology and barbering license from a vocational school and worked in both a smaller and a high-end salons. The cons are that it can take time to build your clientele and when you are busy, you are standing all day. Another potential con is the chemicals used in the nail, color, straightening products. There are chemical-free and low-chemical salons, which is a good niche for health-conscious people. Overall, it is a fun and rewarding occupation, and a creative outlet.
I wish you the best in your journey!
See if you can shadow a stylist, makeup artist, and/or barber, depending on your interests. Observe and ask questions.
Google your local cosmetology and barbering schools. Vocational schools tend to cost less to attend. They may allow you to sit in on a class.
Research professional stylists and colorists. Often they post video workshops to introduce latest techniques.
