Xiong’s Answer

Archaeology is an excellent field to be in, and it is often overlooked. Find a local excavation site, museum, historical building, or library to intern, or volunteer.

Here are some basic personal skills you can start to work on that will help you get ahead:

1) Organization
2) Project Managing
3) Photography
4) Note-taking
5) Write reports
6) Read books
7) Verbal communications
8) Learn to safely use tools such as trowels, spades, mattocks

Improving these basic skills in any or all areas of your life will help prepare you to be an integral part of the archaeology project or team. Hope this helps.

Xiong recommends the following next steps:

Research somewhere to volunteer or intern
Practice everyday skills

CHRIS’s Answer

Your best bet is to find a university with a reputable archaeology program. There at many great programs at there at schools like Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and Brown. I would then reach out to speak with someone in the industry and get their feedback on your questions. There's no better way to find out how to do something than to speak with someone that has firsthand experience doing it.
