What will it be like to get shot with a taser as a law-enforcement officer?

I understand that as a law-enforcement officer you sometimes have to consent to being tased as part of your training. What is that like?

James’s Answer

Tasers hurt like hell. Getting sprayed is even worse. If you work in law enforcement, you will likely have to do both.

Kim’s Answer

Joseph,

It will hurt like you know what. Your whole body will really hurt. Usually they ask for one or two volunteers in each class. I've never heard of a whole class doing it (but, I could be wrong!)

Now, when it comes to the use of chemical mace (OC spray), they usually require everyone to be exposed to that. They want you to appreciate the extreme discomfort you are about to inflict on someone, hoping you will use it only when necessary.

Gershom’s Answer

It really isn’t that bad. It was five seconds of discomfort similar to if you’ve ever been shocked by an electrical outlet. Your body will lock up (neuromuscular incapacitation) and you may let out a yell or some kind of funny noise.

The good thing is that it makes you aware of the feeling and danger if you taser is taken from you. You’ll have your class around you and the camaraderie will carry you through the stressful situations.

P.S.

OC spray is the devil.

Brenda’s Answer

The first agency I started with, you had to be tased to carry a taser. The first thing I noticed was the prongs that went in because of the force behind them. Then I felt the rest but it is only for 5 seconds. It's not that horrible. Afterwards, you are tired like you just worked out. I rather be tased than sprayed. Being sprayed can stay with you for hours and reactivate.
