Vikram’s Answer

Becoming a computer engineer is a lucrative prospect. Not only will you be entering into a career that will not die out any time soon, you will have the option of working for large organizations, public bodies, or as a freelance worker. However, before you begin looking at your life as a computer engineer, you need to assess whether you have these seven skills that are essential for success:

  1. You need to be good at math
If the idea of math sends shivers down your spine, you will struggle to develop a career as a computer engineer. As all analogue information needs to be converted into digital data, there is a lot of math involved in the computer science field. How much science you will need will vary depending on the specialist area you choose to work in, but having a good grasp of it will be necessary for you to get through your degree.

  2. You need to have a love for technology
If you do not love technology and the innovations that come with it, you will struggle to engage in the continuous development that most computer engineers are expected to engage in. Technology changes at a rapid pace, and that is not going to change any time soon. If you are a technology lover, you will be at a huge advantage here.

  3. You should have great communication skills
Unless you are heading down the self-employed route, you will be spending a lot of time working with other people. Being able to communicate and interact with others will help ensure that you flourish as a team. It is also central to your continuous development, as you will often be learning from those around you.

  4. Great presentation skills
Computer engineers who work on a freelance, self-employed, or employed basis should all expect to have great presentation skills. Although this is a highly scientific career, a great deal of creativity goes into the process. You will need to present your ideas and thoughts to other in a way that is coherent and attractive.

  5. Leadership and management skills
Whether you are managing your own project, or working as part of a team, being able to lead will be a vital skill. Even those who are not in senior computer engineer positions find that they have to give a great deal of direction to others, as this is part of the development, problem solving, and innovation process. In addition to being a good leader and manager, you should be good at being led and managed.

  6. Patience
The process of developing a program, maintaining a system, or solving a problem can often be slow and arduous. As such, you will need to have a lot of patience. This is not a career where cutting corners and taking short-cuts works. There are prescribed methods for success, and they need to be followed. You also need to have patience with others as they work through their own development processes.

  7. Analytical skills
Being able to analyze and solve problems is a big part of being a computer engineer. This goes hand-in-hand with being patient, and will form a big part of your success as you learn and flourish in your career.

Clayton’s Answer

To me, the most important skill is problem analysis. The ability to define the problem and formulate a solution is critical. Second is communication. It is imperative to be able to articulate your ideas. Another important skill to master is perseverance. Stick to the task until the task sticks to you.
