Hi Bryan, Our company has a PE - Plant Engineering company the hires the maintenance crew. Of our drivers that are close to retirement end their last few years and part of that crew. They are responsible to maintain the cleanliness for the building sections they are assigned. They have uniforms that it's their responsibility to make sure it is pressed and cleaned so they show a united front. If they don't appear clean how can we expect them to clean our facility. They have great attitudes everyday, even something is bothering them personally they don't let it show. They work hard and come to work on time everyday for the shifts they are assigned. Always put your best foot forward and be the best you everyday.

The responsibilities of a facility maintenance can be great. Every day is different. Depending on the type of properties, most important is probably the heating and cooling requirements. If you are looking to be a part of the maintenance team, having the certification for HVAC will probably be one of the requirements. Besides working on the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems, you will have to have some handyman skills, plumbing, electrical and the list goes on. If you want to be a facility maintenance manager, you not only need to have skills and knowledge as mentioned above, but you need to know how to motivate and guide a team, manage a budget, have good people skills and know how to prioritize. As a manager, I am responsible for all aspects of the building operations. Because they are commercial buildings, I work with janitorial crews, electricians, fire / safety vendors, HVAC vendors, roofing vendors, handyman vendors, with a limited budget. My goal is to reduce cost as we can, while still maintaining the buildings always addressing any safety and security issues first. If you feel you may be interested, you may want to see if there are any local internships for assistant property managers, and check with your high school or local community college to see if they offer any HVAC or Electrical certification programs. I wish you the best, good luck
