Hi Collin,

If you're seriously interested in computer game design, a key first step is to find a college with a degree program specifically in this area. For example, the University of California, Irvine offers a Computer Game Science degree. Check it out at:

I think the most important thing is to get started on your own. All you really need in order to get your career in computer science and more specifically in game design, is access to a person computer. The coolest part of starting on your own is that you'll be doing what is interesting to you so you are going to start learning a lot faster. When I got interested in computers I started asking friends for their old computer laying around so I could try to fix them and also take them apart to learn how they work. I personally learned quickly that I wasn't really interested in fixing computers so I started learning about software development. I just got my "hands dirty" and started learning programing online and started creating my own apps. I started talking to friends and family about what I was learning and people started asking me to develop apps for them. This process allowed me to actually start my computer science career even before I started formerly studying computer science.

Davi recommends the following next steps:

Try getting involved in group projects that you may find in your school or other online communities related to software development and gaming design. That will give you a real feel for the actual job and it will help you decide if this is a will be a fulfilling career for you.

Collin: Find out a college where Computer science degree is providing. Meanwhile you can make your hands dirty with both computer repairing (hardware learning) and in programming. There are plenty of online material available for a beginner to learn programming. Start creating small small basic programs. Once you feel you can write a program by yourself, start participate in coding competitions. That will really help you to increase the knowledge as well as increasing your speed in programming.

To be a computer hardware expert, try to get an old laptop or a desktop. Open it and find out each component and read about what is the purpose of of each of them. Closely watch each connections to the motherboard. There are plenty of YouTube videos available in this subject. Search by the model of the laptop/desktop you selected to learn. Remove the parts and put it back. This way you will get an overall idea about the hardware. And also if any of your computer system is not working, before reaching to a service person put your hands there. Search the problem online, you will get some idea what to try.

By doing this you will come to know which field you are more interested. Choose that and learn and research more into that carrier.

All the best for your future!!!

How to Become a Video Game Designer
The following are steps you can take to become a video game designer.

Step 1: Obtain a Bachelor's Degree

Designers may need a bachelor's degree, especially if they're planning to work for a large game studio. Although some schools offer a degree in game design, aspiring game designers can get the necessary training from computer science, software engineering, or related degree programs. The coursework for a game design program covers subjects like 2D and 3D modeling and animation, level and interface design, storyboard rendering, drawing, and scripting.

It's important that you also play video games. As simple as it may sound, having experience and familiarity with playing video games is important. Even at a young age, being aware of popular trends in the industry and understanding advanced technology can be beneficial. Playing video games can also show you how a game is structured and can give you a chance to start thinking of ways to make improvements for when you design your own game.

Join a game design club. Some schools have a club designed for students who wish to develop and discuss games outside of the classroom. This type of club generally covers all facets of game production, which could be rather useful for future game designers.

Step 2: Determine a Career Path

Even within this specialty, there are different types of designers, including lead designer, level designer and content designer. Additionally, game designers have a diverse array of responsibilities that may not immediately be obvious, so aspiring professionals in this field should consider what type of game design career they want to pursue.

Step 3: Gain Experience

Even after completing the required education, getting a job with a game studio can be difficult. Since employers require game design experience for most mid-level positions, aspiring game designers need to find ways to get relevant experience. Some companies offer internships and co-op positions for prospective designers. Small businesses may be willing to hire inexperienced game programmers or artists, which could lead to game design positions later on.

Step 4: Develop a Game

Game design candidates can get an edge over the competition by designing their own game. Students can use free or inexpensive programs to create simple games at first and begin working on more complex projects after grasping the basics. Each game can be added to an individual's portfolio and count as design experience.

Nicholas’s Answer

I work as UI/UX Designer and work closely with developers everyday. You dont necessarily have to have a 4 year degree to get into coding. You just have to know how to code. I've seen men and women who get hired with a masters degree and some with no degree that went to a coding boot camp school. It's the same as a UI Designer.

If your wondering what a UI Designer is, we essentially create the web page and/or app. We do the user research, testing, then design the app based on the research and finally create a working prototype before handing it off to developers.

If your looking into computer hardware, then your looking at getting certified. A+ certification is a great start for that path.

Take your time and do your research. Ask yourself which part of tech would I wake up everyday with a smile and go to work.
