Hello aspiring fashion designer!
To answer your question, it helps to go to a design school that has fashion design as a major. Having good drawing skills is definitely a plus but not necessary. I can't emphasize enough how important it is to learn computer design software (adobe illustrator & nedgraphics are two that designers use. I got a fashion design degree from a small college in Atlanta. When I was in school I only focused on having my own fashion line (which most asaspiring designers do) and that's great. But I didnt realize that there are many avenues to take. My first real job out of college was graphic design for t-shirts. After that I was a technical designer...I never knew this position existed. Fast forward 18 years and now I'm designing fabric for car interiors. So the short answer to your question is YES! You can most defintely be a fashion designer. But its not an easy road. With hard work and an open mind to new opportunities you can achieve anything. Never give up!
I'm more than happy to answer any more questions in further detail

Aspiring Fashion Designer!

I am so pumped to hear you're interested in fashion design. I started like you, sketching for all of my friends at school. I fell in love and although many people from my low-income small town in the mountains told me my career might not be the best choice I am stubborn and followed through. I can not express how important it is to get a degree in this area of study. College is a scary thing but you CAN do it, and it's the first step to making your dreams a reality. Look for colleges in your state that have a fashion design program and apply to all of them no matter the tuition rate, most of these schools will offer great scholarships and grants. LEARN as much as you can when you find the right school. Do internships with actual designers not just retail if you actually want to go into design. I wish I would have taken a few graphic design classes but you'll also want to take art classes as well. Learn as much as you can about fabrics and the business of fashion. I also hate to say this but it's also about knowing people. It doesn't have to be at first, just put yourself out there and meet people - be kind!! that stands out the most. I got ahead by doing lots of volunteer work, which I love to do and would have done regardless but in an industry that is very self focused many love to see someone being selfless and want that kind of person on their team. In school build a digital portfolio and always take a risk when applying for jobs!! you'll never know who might want an interview!!

Best of Luck!
