Billy’s Answer

Glad that you are asking this question and trying to understand the difference between the two.

Applied Mathematics is using Math concepts to solve practical every day problems e.g. predicting probabilities of an event (weather), calculating US household incomes average etc.

Information Technology on the other hand is the framework supporting for how we collect, organize, process, visualize and store the information about day to day things and derive insights from that information to make smart decisions e.g. Search Engine where once search for a customer service number and locate that easily, Video service where once can watch videos on how to make a computer work faster and use that to speed up your computer.

Billy recommends the following next steps:

Think of where you use Applied Math and Information Technology in your life. What are you better at? Applied Math?

Jasbir’s Answer

Applied mathematics is the application of mathematical methods like Quantity , Algebra ,geometry , Probability etc by different fields and Information Technology is one such field. Information Technology involves installing, organizing and maintaining computer systems as well as designing and operating networks and databases .

gejun’s Answer

From the concept level, it should be very different. But they related to each other. In information technology area, lots of fundmental things like algorithm, data models, artificial intelligence are all built based on the applied math. In other word, math are quite important in information technology.

Saji’s Answer

Applied mathematics is the application of mathematical methods by different fields such as physics, engineering, medicine, biology, finance, business, computer science, and industry. Thus, applied mathematics is a combination of mathematical science and specialized knowledge.
Information technology (IT) is the use of any computers, storage, networking and other physical devices, infrastructure and processes to create, process, store, secure and exchange all forms of electronic data.

Peter’s Answer

Applied math today includes things like operations research (for example, keeping waiting lines from getting too long at Disneyland, or deciding what mix of products to produce from a group fo factories) and also things like cryptography (the math that protects websites or keeps financial information private).

Information technology has to make the math work in an electrical circuit, seriously, so it becomes physics and mechanical engineering to various degrees as well as the underlying math. An applied mathematician can devise a new algorithm for keeping secrets, but an IT person has to turn that into a machine that doesn't make it easy to go around that math and break the protection even if an attacker could not break the math.

Both fields use a lot of computing skills, but the mathematician is more likely to be exploring mathematical truths or trying to make a calculation more efficient – while the IT person is producing programs that are products, rather than just writing code as a research tool or as a prototype for what will someday become a software product.

S’s Answer

Applied Mathematics is really the application of mathematical concepts to the area you work in. It could be through algorithms, formulae, data models, etc by analyzing data, trends. Job roles for this field can be across a very wide range of industries. Information Technology is about creating software and hardware to support your business needs. For example: If you have a business of selling to someone and you want customers to be able to order stuff online. Your IT team would be responsible for creating software for a portal so customers can search you up on the net, buying and supporting hardware to support your software applications.
