In the near future, I think you'll be OK. Long term trends that don't bode well for this career choice include:
- Increasing urban density / New-Urbanism
- Increasing car / ride - sharing
- Tech advancements that allow for more resource sharing or supplant the automobile entirely
- Increasing functional complexity
- Exposure to toxins
Good electricians and plumbers make nice salaries; you might also consider these careers.

The general trend of Automotive Service Technicians and Mechanics jobs is decreasing. Depending on where you are physically located, it might be faster or slower. Also, Depending on what type of Auto Mechanic (Engine, Body etc..) you are looking into, you will be exposed to hazardous materials such as Fuels (gas, diesel), Oils (Motor Oil, Brake fluid,), Exhaust, Brake dust etc. that potentially affect your health. The industry is changing from a combustion engine to an Electric Motor which isn’t as complex a design and moves the knowledge more from a core Mechanical one to and Software based one. If you are starting a career, you might want to consider one that has a growing demand. And if you like tinkering around, there are other potential fields to explore on the government website below. It lists summaries, salaries and demand for the various careers. mechanics Engineering
