You can be a researcher in several fields of study but generally you need a graduate degree and a thirst for knowledge, advancing science and satisfying your curiosity. You would also need skills in statistics and some programming.

Hi, first of all you need to have a high bar of learning and curiosity, very organized and having passion for discovery. In terms of school path you usually have to achieve the PhD and be prepared to compromise high salary, at least for first years, for a better cause which is research

The exact skills and knowledge required very much depend on exactly what subject you want to do research in. Researchers normally specialise in very narrow fields - for example I'm currently doing research into neutron and gamma-ray measurements for fusion energy - so you need to study your particular subject area through school and college/university up to postgraduate level to get the basic knowledge and skills you need to start research.
Aside from that, traits like curiosity, passion for your subject, and determination are all needed to various degrees. A bit of creative thinking is also helpful in research too.
