This is a great question. And easy way to understand this is to take a micro-level view: think of a business in your community. To run that business it requires operations, accounting, HR, marketing, IT, etc. While marketing is what you do to promote that business. this includes promotions, public relations, social media, advertising, etc. So, if you major in business, it is going to be a much larger field, while marketing is a subset of that: the promotions part of a business. Depending on which school you go to, they may focus on a hands on approach of business, for example, how to run a business from the ground up. Other schools are more theoretical so you will learn about business theory, international business, economics, etc. same goes for marketing. Hope this helps. Best of luck.

Hi Nagesh M. I see that you posted this question a little while ago so I hope my answer to you (or others who may read this response) is still helpful.

As I write this response to you in 2020, I wanted to share what may be considered a newer aspect of marketing. Within marketing, there is a career line, called MarTec which is shorthand for marketing technology. This is a type of technology that enhances marketers abilities to know and understand what their potential customers do or don't like (marketing major). When this type of information is legally obtained, it can be very useful in designing products that can be successfully sold(business major). In other words, my experience in marketing technology is that it can act as a sort of bridge between stakeholders that are focused on managing a business and stakeholders that are focused on growing a business.

Marketing technology contains tasks that can have a wide ranging emphasis on how much technology is actually used. Some of the tasks can be highly technical such as programming, with the use of statistics, while some tasks can be more qualitative such as social media engagement.

I hope that in addition to the other answers provided, what I have shared will be helpful.

Best of luck to you!

Hi Nagesh, the two (general business and marketing) can be two of the same, such as the core classes but it is the concentration classes that will differ. For example general business you will focus on the overall business (accounting, business law, economics, finance, int. business, management) and in business marking you will have classes that focus on service marketing, retail, internet marketing, social marketing, international marketing, etc. The best way to find out which suits you the best is to take a class in each, you won't be wasting either class because you will need electives in your degree plan. Hope this helps!
