sofia’s Answer

You don't need a college degree to be a hair stylist but do need to be certified and keep up with your credits each year to have an active license which is required by the state. Once you look at schools determine which is the best fit for you. you will learn the basics at the school and you can then specialize or generalize, work for someone or open your own shop. You have so many options. it is a growing industry.

Hi Aliyah,

Thanks for the question. Very few cosmetology schools offer degree programs. Most cosmetology schools offer certificate and/or diploma programs which are typically much shorter than degree programs (usually around a year or so).

I would encourage you to check out two of the largest cosmetology schools in the U.S. just to get an idea for what the programs look like. You can always contact the school directly for specific information:

Paul Mitchell: https://paulmitchell.edu/programs

Empire: http://www.empire.edu/

Please note that I am not specifically endorsing either of these schools. I am just offering them as a starting point for you to collect information and to better understand that these programs require.
