Being a social worker is demanding. You will see things that you never even thought existed. Maybe how poor people are. Things we have we take for granted as others live in the streets and maybe search through garbage cans to get food. Some people's living conditions are not what you might be use to seeing. You might encounter the effects that drug and alcohol use does to a persons body, mind, etc. Having a big heart and the need to help others is a good start with this profession. Although you want to take everything home with you, this is where you need to learn to separate work from home. We help people to the best of our ability and provide resources and care in order to help them succeed in life.
There are times you wish you could have helped someone more, you are always wondering if there is more you could have done. But don't stress, if you have a big heart I am sure you provided all resources to help! If you are like me, you love your job and enjoy helping people. It is a good profession to pursue and to me rewarding when you help others :)

Let me start by saying I'm not a SOCIAL WORKER however I have a niece and good friend that are. It takes a lot of dedication and emotional strength. Depending on where you work and what you are dealing with. Your work isn't finished when you leave the office or hospital you're working for. Many of the cases you are working on hit you emotionally and follow you home and into your personal life. You worry about a child you saw that perhaps is not being cared for properly or about a patient that is close to the end of his or her life and you've been counseling the family. If you work at a shelter you might see mentally ill patients refuse help and medication only to come back time and time again. I do believe that the right person for this job has to have a big heart and a dedication to service and the ability to know you are doing the very best you can for those you are caring for and then be able to go home and spend quality time with your family.
Thank you so much!!
