Elizabeth,
Good afternoon. Most local & state departments, if not all, would require you to first be a police officer gaining street experience. Then after a few years you would be qualified to put in to be a narcotics officer. If you went federal, DEA, you would first go to their academy then to a field office to con duct drug investigations. Hope this helps

If you are looking in to becoming a police officer, I would recommend pursuing a Criminal Justice degree. No one enters the police force and immediately becomes a narcotics officer. You have to work a couple of years in patrol before you can work in narcotics. Having a degree will get you there faster. Start looking at internships, job shadows, and schedule a ride along. Best of luck to you! We need more people with high aspirations in law enforcement.

Get on the police force perform your duties at the highest level, make arrests and get the community to trust you they are your allies not the enemy. Drug arrests in high crime areas under your belt will make a name with your peers, share information with the narcotics division, if your department has a tactical team use your knowledge of the area and it's players to get on the team . Good luck and stay safe.

You have to be a street officer first. After a few years underneath belt and numerous drug arrest, then you apply for narcotics detective.
