Whats the difference between getting a masters degree and a phd in marine biology? I want to work in research, which one is right for me?

I want to be a marine biologist but the school I have chosen is only a 4 year program. After that I know I will need to move on, but I am not sure which direction to be focusing towards. #marine-biology

Hi Jade!
As a marine biologist, I can say it is so worth it. As far being in research and deciding on PHD and Masters, there isn't too much difference in the work field. If you choose to go for your masters, you get to choose whether you want to do a thesis or not. If you want to continue on and get your PHD, choosing a thesis would be a better choice. It prepares you for the work you will be doing under a professor of your choosing. Doing your masters without a thesis just really gets you the higher degree wanted. For research, it could be either one is better depending on the research you do. If you would like to to work for someone else on their project, then it doesn't matter. (More experience the better) but if you would like to conduct your own research project and have people working for you, then definitely do your PHD.
