As a colon and rectal surgeon, I would adamantly say that society needs to get over the stigma that comes with an ostomy. When patients for life-saving reasons need to have stool diverted through their abdominal wall, we call this an ostomy. Many of the patients that have this done are cancer survivors or those who are currently undergoing treatment. Other patients are those who have undergone serious trauma or have life-threatening inflammatory bowel disease. It kills me when patients are fighting so hard to survive, and instead of receiving support from their community, they receive criticism.

Fear of the unfamiliar and unknown. Each individual has learned and innate social bias, over coming and stepping outside of those social bias' is the largest social stigma the world is faced with. Providing equitable solutions to all individuals irregardless of their social and physical characteristics. It is unrealistic to think that society can eliminate social bias, but we can acknowledge it and agree to disagree with each other without imposing personal judgement against one another.
Look within your self; take an introspective inventory or your personal bias' and determine if they require audit or change. Be socially aware of any bias actions, statements, or reactions.
