Kathryn’s Answer

To be a research scientist, you need knowledge of the type of science you want to study (at least a masters degree and preferably a Phd) such as biology, ecology, geography, oceanography, chemistry, etc.) as well as good writing skills and math/computer skills.

Carina’s Answer

It's important to have the scientific/academic knowledge of whatever you're researching but it's also incredibly important to have the communication skills to illustrate the work you're doing to an audience that doesn't know much about the topic. Communication or Public Speaking classes would be great for this.

You're going to need a degree in whatever you want to research, and some internships to hone your laboratory skills.
