Dr Ezat Luba’s Answer

Hi Addison! I was born in St Louis Park, MN!
I cannot find your age on here, but, it's never too late. I had NO veterinary experience before went to vet school. I went the Royal Veterinary College in the UK, the top ranked vet school in the world. When I was in college I interned at a marine lab where I trained sea lions, and after college I was an intern at the NIH where I trained monkeys. I had a very unique resume when I applied and I think that was to my advantage. I didn't know the first thing about cats!
It would have benefited me to shadow a small animal veterinarian before I went to school, I would have understood the profession better.

Hope this helps!

Kim’s Answer

You could get experience in things that will help you to be successful in a Veterinary office.
1. volunteer at the local animal shelter
2. take a summer job with a farmer/rancher or other place with cattle/horses/goats, etc
3. Attend summer camp at the Minnesota zoo
4. do something to get experience talking to people (volunteer as a greeter at the local hospital, etc.) Vets spend a lot of time talking with humans!
5. Work at a doggy day care facility. There are two near you! Paws in the Park, and Pampered Pooch.
6. take some on-line classes: the intro course is $149 for 24 hours. https://www.ed2go.com/search?courseType=Fundamentals&courseType=Advanced%20Career%20Training&pageSize=25&term=veterinary
7. Google "Minneapolis equine therapy". There are programs that provide therapy for people with disabilities using horses. Perhaps you could volunteer to help out in care of the animals?

hope this helps!
